I’ve been kind of disappointed in the quality of QOTD lately and judging by the comments I don’t think I’m the only one. In the spirit of boredom I’ve decided to run a question of the moment.
What is your favorite carb?
Currently I’m having a boner for Weber sidedrafts.
What’s your favorite Oppo?

Pssssh, I’m totally a pasta guy.

Am I doing this wrong?

my favorite to work on, a Bing sidedraft from a Puch DS60.
I had this setup in my 3.0s with the triple Webers, once I got them balanced god did that thing scream

Quadrajet. The most underrated American carb ever. They flow great from the factory, and make good amounts of power. No wonder they were standard on all 4-barrel 350s.

theres a place that does a mexican pizza with jalapenos, hamburg onions and peppers and adds chili powder to the red sauce.

Enjoying the Mikuni 40s I’m running on the Celica, lately.

Nah.
You just got commenting access on oppo.

The mightydemon. Able to tune exactly how I want and always dead reliable.

I’m partial to Mikuni PHH’s, but I’m biased because I run them on my Celica.

Agreed on QOTD and AOTD. Like, what the hell is up with today’s question?
Anyways, my favorite is definitely the Tri-Power (three 2 bbl. carbs) setup on the L71.

If you’re going to do fuel injection at least do ITBs.

I would love to design a set of ITBs for my car. Be the only guy in the whole damn place with ITBs on a 2V 4.6 motor.

Pizza from Salvatore’s Tomato Pies .
The last one I had was a special they ran a couple weeks ago: roasted asparagus, roasted whole garlic cloves, gorgonzola cheese, fig reduction and beet pesto.
It was so freakin good.

Mikuni because they took the Solex carbs that were known for being on quick but unreliable cars and made them work.

I have triple Weber 45s on my 240Z, I would like to try the Mikunis. My carbs came with the car and some other parts so I used them, Mikunis get expensive.

Quadrajets are arguably the most sophisticated 4 barrels ever made, which made them very capable at part and full throttle and very efficient. The complexity makes them trickier to tune than Holley’s, though, which is why so many people hate them.
I think those people are idiots who should learn to read a manual.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:06 |

This is a thing I’ve been looking at. But I need to get a 4.6L 2V in my hands first. Because reasons...
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:07 |

My dad always talks about people who knew how to tune “quadrajunks” with a sort of mystical regard. Apparently most people chucked ‘em and put on Holleys because they couldn’t figure out how to tune them. But those who knew the secrets could extract some amazing power.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:13 |

I have heard this as well. I guess a good Quad tune can return fairly good fuel economy (on par with fuel injection), excellent throttle response, and good power. I’ve messed with them a little bit and have decided that the old one on my buddy’s ‘77 T/A had too much potential for stuff to go wrong that I didn’t want to go crazy.

Junkyards are full of 2Vs. Just be sure to get one with PI heads.

I need a place to work on it... don’t think the complex manager would be too happy with me dragging a 4.6 up to my 12th floor apartment and putting it in the bathtub. Then again, neither would my wife...

I can’t. Because tarbo.

All-out favorite, Weber DCOEs. I have a set of 45’s for my 2002. Easiest to work on and thus another favorite, the Solex PICT as fitted to aircooled VWs. I should clarify by saying that’s real Solex originals, not shitty Bocar knockoffs. Those damn things are bad out of the box.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:30 |

I don’t think they were standard on all 4bbl 350s. I think at least early 2nd gen Z28s used Holleys. http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/z28lt1.…

My dad had a 79 Caddy with a 425 v8 and Q-jet carbs. WOT was something else in that car.

Do you know anything about the head setup? I’ve heard Ford only uses one casting for both heads, and just spins them around for the left and right banks. Do you know if there’s any truth to this?
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:39 |
|
I love some SU carbs. Simple to tune. Very flexible.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:42 |
|
No that is incorrect. They are at best a mirror of each other. The cam extends out in front of the head. So a bearing is needed on the front of the head. In order to turn them around for the other side the cam would extend out the back of the head. FYI, the PI heads were introduced on the 99 Mustang GT I believe. In order to get the highest compression out of a 4.6 without changing pistons, stroke, or shaving the deck is to get a non-PI headed block and put a PI head on it.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 14:55 |
|
I have heard that, the PI/Non-PI head setup. Although if the castings aren’t the same, that may severely hamper my plans.
What I want to do, and thought was possible with some modifications (until just now), is spin the heads 180 degrees, creating a “hot vee”, so the exhaust points into the center of the engine.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:02 |
|
You could maybe do that if you put a right bank on the left and a left bank on the right. But then you would need a custom ground cam i think, custom exhaust, custom intakes. If the bolt pattern on the head allows it, I guess it would be possible.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:17 |

I have a 3C Q-jet in my Cutlass. There’s nothing like having the secondaries kick in at the same time as the kickdown.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:17 |
|
I did not know that. My bad.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:17 |

My Uncle is a Q-jet expert. He’s gotten flow out of them that no Holleys can achieve.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:18 |

Well that’s what I’ve been trying to figure out. From looking at pictures I think the head bolt pattern is symmetrical so it would allow it. I haven’t thought far enough ahead to figure out cams but I don’t think it would matter, keep the correct cam for each bank would work, I think. I’m not changing the firing order or anything. Custom headers and intakes are a given - hence why I’d probably go to an ITB setup. If it’s that much work, might as well do something awesome.
The biggest issues I’m trying to think through is the ancillary systems - oil and coolant. I think the coolant passages are symmetrical like the bolt holes, except for the feed and returns, so the heads and/or block deck may have to be modified to channel that, or run an external line and pick it up in the front of the head, I’m not sure. The oil is the one that’s bugging me - drainbacks are located on the outside of the head - if you flip the heads you don’t have drainbacks anymore. I’m not sure if you can drill the head because I have feeling you’re either going to go through a coolant passage or intake port. Again, may require a dry sump system with extra scavenging up top... assuming I can figure out a way to oil to the head in the first place.

They’re tricky to tune, but once they’re tuned - HNNGH!

Ford Model T Vaporizer. Because these are the craziest carbs ever sold as standard equipment.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:20 |
|
They’re practically bulletproof, and can be found anywhere. If you’re tuning up and old SBC, try pulling a Q-jet from a junked car and see what you can do. They’re amazing carbs with ridiculously awesome flow when you tune them right.

I wish we had more cars during the victorian era because this reeks of overly complex steampunk BS.

Thinking about the cams, you may be right. Whatever the case, I wish you luck on your project. It is very ambitious.

Thanks. Hopefully my wife and I will be buying a house later this year and then I can get started on it. If it works, it’s going in an vintage style F1 car.

Always thought the Mopar 426 hemi had a cool dual set up. Also we need a COTD too
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:43 |

It’s been tried a few times and I think the only way to effectively do COTD is on the front page.

I’m pretty sure some of the hotter 396 and 427 Chevrolets, along with certain BOPs, had Holleys as well. Quadrajets were also used on 429 Cobra Jet Fords, which is a twist worthy of the Twilight Zone.
![]() 05/28/2015 at 15:50 |

I didn’t mention those since his statement was about the 350, but I think you’re right. I think some of the 350s in early C3 Corvettes had Holleys as well.
